Description
Orlistat is a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor used to support weight loss and obesity management. It works by blocking the enzyme that breaks down fats in the digestive system, preventing about 25–30% of dietary fat from being absorbed. The unabsorbed fat is excreted through the stool. This leads to a calorie deficit, aiding in gradual weight reduction.
Available in 60 mg (over-the-counter) and 120 mg (prescription) strengths, Orlistat is typically taken three times a day with meals containing fat. It is recommended for individuals with a BMI ≥ 30, or ≥ 27 with weight-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia.
Common side effects include oily stools, flatulence, and frequent bowel movements, especially if taken with high-fat meals. To avoid nutrient deficiencies, a multivitamin (containing A, D, E, and K) is recommended at bedtime. Always consult a healthcare provider before starting Orlistat.
