Description
Actonel, containing the active ingredient Risedronate sodium, is a bisphosphonate medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis and other bone disorders. It works by inhibiting osteoclast activity, the cells responsible for bone breakdown, thereby improving bone density and reducing the risk of spinal and hip fractures.
Actonel is commonly prescribed for:
-
Postmenopausal osteoporosis
-
Osteoporosis in men
-
Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis
-
Paget’s disease of bone
It is typically taken once a day, once a week, or once a month depending on the dosage form (e.g., 5 mg, 35 mg, or 150 mg tablets). Patients must take it on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, and remain upright for at least 30 minutes afterward to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation.
Common side effects include abdominal pain, acid reflux, and joint or muscle pain. Serious but rare side effects include jaw bone problems and unusual femur fractures. Always follow your doctor’s instructions closely when using Actonel.
